I was looking for a manual car, something with visceral feedback. Nineteen years old, a 2.7-litre engine and a manual gearbox. You need to be switched on, though, and that’s the whole point.

Up at 3:00 and on the road to Wales. I got there just as the sun was rising: a beautiful sunrise and no traffic whatsoever. I drove the road up and down, twice, because I loved it so much, and was home by 10:00.
